Ten years ago, Associate Professor of Engineering Mike Hudoba achieved something rare 鈥 he earned a Guinness World Record. At the time, he was a doctoral candidate in The Ohio State University鈥檚 College of Engineering working with DNA. Now the chair of Otterbein鈥檚 Department of Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics, Hudoba was invited back to OSU to give a about his world record on March 22, 2025.
Hudoba鈥檚 talk, “A Scientists March of Script Ohio: DNA Origami and the story of DNA Script Ohio,” is one of nine featured at the 14th annual event. You can watch his TEDx talk starting 41 minutes into .

鈥淭he talk is an introduction to DNA Origami, which involves designing DNA to self-assemble into nanomachines for biological applications. The talk includes my story of making the DNA Origami Script Ohio, earning a Guinness World Record, which exemplifies how science can be both fun and practical,鈥 Hudoba said.

It all started when Hudoba traveled to Munich, Germany, in 2011 to give a presentation on DNA origami, a process by which scientists bend and fold DNA strands into shapes of their choosing. His slideshow ended with a photo of the OSU marching band performing the Script Ohio. One of the German professors laughed and suggested Hudoba should use DNA origami to form a Script Ohio. Challenge accepted.
Hudoba started working on the Script Ohio in 2013 and that summer, he created a DNA strand that was 103 by 55 nanometers 鈥 smaller than several-billionths the size of the real Script Ohio. In 2015, Guinness World Records certified Hudoba鈥檚 achievement as the 鈥渟mallest logo from a single uninterrupted DNA strand.鈥
Hudoba was nominated anonymously to give the TEDx Talk at OSU鈥檚 14th annual event, but he was excited to be selected.
鈥淭he DNA Script Ohio is a fun story that can help get people interested and excited about the field,鈥 he said.
